This Pit Bull Is Making Headlines For Her Breed As The New Face Of Police K9 Officers

K9 Officer Kiah doesn't let her breed define her. She's too busy fighting crime and keeping the streets safe!

The average K9 Unit Detection Dog looks nothing like Kiah. They usually sport long shaggy coats, thin muzzles, pointed ears, and focussed eyes. German shepherds and Belgian Malinois type dogs have dominated the police industry as co-working canine crime fighters for decades. Many of which are chosen for their pure strength, intimidating appearances, and ability to train.

Though Kiah may look nothing like the typical police dog, she has become a recognized Detection K9 with the Poughkeepsie Police Department, and is Officer Justin Bruzgul’s partner in law enforcement.

Kiah, the trained Detection K9, is one of nine pit bulls in law enforcement.

Kiah’s journey begins in the shelter, like millions of her breed. She was discovered by the Animal Farm Foundation and considered to be a perfect candidate for the Universal K9 training program, where she was trained in the same way as German shepherds and Belgian Malinois for police work.

Animal Farm Foundation and Universal K9 have joined forces to rescue dogs like Kiah and rehabilitate them into model canine citizens. Animal Farm Foundation covers all costs associated with rescuing and training the dogs, while Universal K9 prepares them for the workforce.

Together, the two organizations have successfully placed nine pit bulls with K9 handlers in police departments across America.

These four-legged officers have proved they can do the jobs as well as German shepherds or Malinois.

Kiah was rescued from the shelter and trained to be a K9 police officer.

Kiah works alongside her partner, Officer Bruzgul, each day, assisting in detection and investigation. She is patrol certified, and also trained to track missing people, including young children.

Kids love her, and as soon as you meet her she just wants to give kisses and play. I haven’t seen a mean bone in her.

Officer Bruzgal offered to work with Kiah to showcase that shelter dogs, “will work just as well, if not better” than pedigree shepherds. These purebred dogs often cost police departments thousands of dollars to purchase and train. There are millions of dogs entering the shelter system each year, thousands of which would make ideal K9 unit dogs.

Though only nine pit bull type dogs have been placed in the work force, we are expecting to see many more dogs like Kiah in law enforcement.

She’s a part of my family. I love her to death. She’s my best friend and my partner every day.

Kiah and Officer Bruzgul are not only partners, they are best friends!
