Why We’re Thankful for Our Dogs

Thanksgiving is upon us, and while our furry friends may not be able to communicate with us why they love their owners, we can certainly show them how we feel (an extra treat can’t hurt, right?). So when it’s your turn to say what you’re grateful for at dinner, here are a few ideas of where you can start.

1. Unconditional love

People use dogs as therapy animals for a reason! When nothing is going the way you want it, or if you’re suffering from mental health disorders, the unconditional love provided by a dog is likely to make the worst situation a little brighter. Dogs can typically sense when you’re down and will show their support by snuggling or laying their heads on your lap. It’s hard not to smile at that!

2. Exercise

Motivating yourself to lace up your running shoes and hit the pavement can be hard. But when you have a dog that depends on you, you have no choice but to get outside every now and then. Walking and running are great ways to counteract the sedentary days most office workers have, and your dog is making sure that you both get some much needed movement.

3. Social interactions

The fact that you have to get out of the house to take your dogs for walks often means that you run into other pups and their owners. Even for the most introverted people, social interaction is important. Many studies have shown that a strong social support system leads to an increased lifespan.

4. Safety

No matter the size of your dog, they always seem to bark at strangers (whether they’re humans or squirrels). Dogs are loyal protectors that will alert their owners of anything suspicious.

5. Entertainment

Lastly, our furry friends are the best source of entertainment. Each one has a unique personality and its own quirks. Whether you have a St Bernard who still thinks he’s a lap puppy, a chihuahua who acts more like a police dog, or a broccoli-loving Yorkie, they give you something to giggle about on a daily basis.

Our dogs are our most loyal friends, and we could go on forever about why we love them as much as we do. While we don’t encourage giving your doggo a slice of your Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, we do encourage you to make these DIY pumpkin spice dog treats or go for an extra walk to show your pup how grateful you are.
