When You Fall For A Dog That Loves Someone Else

What happens when that dog you’ve become smitten with loves someone else instead? The heartbreak and anguish of calling its name only to have it run past your outstretched arms and into the arms of someone else.

“If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.”

I’ve always thought that was unbelievably bad advice from Stephen Stills. It’s also pretty terrible to the one you’re with. I mean, hey, thanks for being a consolation prize, darling.

Falling for someone that isn’t into you happens to everyone at some point in life. There are countless movies, books, songs, poems, paintings, you name it, about the concept. Sure, you could get out there and meet new dogs. You could even adopt a second dog in a ‘love the one you’re with’ scenario. It may even have the added bonus of making the first dog a little bit jealous, but you’d be doing it all for the wrong reasons.

You’d still be hung up on trying to win the affection of dog number one.

You won’t be able to move on until you’ve accepted that you aren’t the favorite. You have to be willing to take a back seat and let things play out. I know it’s not what you wanted to hear.

You wanted this to be an advice column on how to get your dog to love you more than it loves your partner, but it’s not. I’m sorry. Love happens, you can’t control it.
