You want to adopt a dog and you want to adopt that dog now. I can’t say that I blame you. You have a significant other that appears to be on board. So, you’ve decided to head to the shelter today and meet the dog love of your life. You are excited beyond belief. You are surer than sure that you are ready for this.
But…
Is your partner?
You need to be surer than sure that they are surer than sure and not just trying to appease you. There are many, many, many questions you both need to ask each other and yourselves, but the number one question that every couple should answer before getting a dog is:
ARE WE SURE WE ARE READY FOR THIS?
Make a checklist. Check it ten thousand times. Write up pros and cons. Weigh them ten thousand times. You both need to be on the same page. You both need to come to the same answer of:
YES WE ARE SURE WE ARE READY FOR THIS!
Trust me, if one of you isn’t really on board, things will only spiral downward with time. If that happens, there will only be one question you’ll be answering:
WHO GETS THE DOG IN THE BREAK UP?
That one will be easier to answer if both of you didn’t answer yes to the first question.
